About Ubwiru

Our Philosophy

Ubwiru Woodcraft is a Rwandan furniture manufacturing start-up.  At Ubwiru, we strive to create high quality furniture at an affordable price through our specialised woodcraft. All our furniture is designed and made in our workshop in Kacyiru, Kigali, Rwanda. We specialise in Libuyu, Muvula, Pine and Umusave.

The name 'Ubwiru' translates to a well-kept secret in Kinyarwanda. 

Our guiding principles are: quality, affordability and sustainability. 

We strive to deliver high quality products by sourcing only the best wood and wooden materials for our production process. We apply modern scientific practices to ensure we can measure and control moisture levels in our wood. Our workshop is more than just a place where we cut and assemble wood - it’s a working space where our team continuously experiments with new practices to create high quality finished products. 

Affordability is one of the core components of our business model. As a start-up we understand that scaling production will ensure the reduction in the cost of our products. Currently we use various input material purchasing options to reduce the cost of production and to carry the savings over to our customers.

Sustainability is the bedrock of any successful start-up. At Ubwiru we have been working on both our financial and environmental sustainability strategies since the inception of our business. Our funding model, for now, remains revenue based and we are exploring further funding options to expand our production capacity. The core tenant of our environmental strategy is to partner with forestry and agricultural NGO’s in the Great Lakes Region.
